Virgin material price data brings together the cost base of the standard and engineering plastics and helps place price movements in context across material types and regions.
Virgin plastics – also referred to as prime material – are newly produced polymers, from standard plastics such as PE, PP, PVC, PET and PS through engineering thermoplastics such as the polyamides, polycarbonate, POM, PMMA and PBT to the reactive components of the polyurethanes and the resins.
Almost every price we report refers to ready-to-use compounds rather than to the base polymers that still have to be compounded; the only genuine base polymer quotation is PVC-S. Added to these are the isocyanates and polyols as reactive components, together with the as yet unblended ortho resins. The largest share by volume falls to the polyolefins PE and PP – together with the engineering thermoplastics they account for around 460 of the 480 million tonnes of granulates and powders worldwide by nameplate capacity.
For procurement, pricing, and commercial teams, this overview brings the virgin material price series together in one place.
This group brings together the polymer groups and types of virgin material – among them polyethylene, polypropylene, PVC, the styrenics, the engineering thermoplastics as well as the polyurethanes and resins. Each tile leads to the relevant group or type page with its price series.
Analyse price data for composites (UP ortho resin, medium reactive) in pricenxt and keep composite part, pipe, and automotive moulding markets in view.
Virgin material combines defined specifications with broad availability. Regions and transaction types make price series comparable in detail.
Broad material spectrum
From standard to engineering plastics, virgin material covers widely differing requirements in properties and cost.
Standard plastics: PE, PP, PVC, and PS for high-volume applications.
Engineering thermoplastics: PA, PC, POM, PBT, and PMMA for demanding components.
Regions & transaction types: contract, manufacturer direct as well as spot imports and spot domestic allow detailed comparison.
Market relevance
Virgin plastics prices are relevant to companies that purchase virgin-grade materials, cost them or have to account for them in price negotiations.
Procurement: teams can factor price movements into their purchasing plans at an early stage.
Pricing: price series support structured discussions on material costs and price adjustment mechanisms.
Controlling: price histories help document cost assumptions in a traceable way.
Analysis in pricenxt
In pricenxt, virgin plastics price data can be evaluated in a structured way using configurable filters, interactive charts, and boards.
Variant comparison: different price series can be set against one another in a single chart.
Period analysis: you choose the observation period freely and add trend lines or regressions.
Saving to boards: relevant analyses can be saved as a card on a board and shared.
